Phantom Limb

By atheistbob

Dear Atheist Bob,

How do they know?
How do you actually know anything about God without having to have faith? Is there anyone who actually knows something in reality? It would be nice to hear from someone who doesn’t have that glassy look in their eye like they’re in a dream world.

Sincerely,

Dwight in Frankfurt

Dear Dwight,

I believe in God because he answers the prayers of thousands of amputees every year by growing their severed limbs back for them. Miracle!

Oh, wait, no he doesn’t. I forgot: he never ever heals amputees. He only heals people with internal sickness that already has at least a small chance of healing on its own anyway. Amazing that in all the millions of cases of people who claim to have been healed by God, not a SINGLE ONE has been the regrowth of a severed limb.

Amputee

In fact, in what is certainly the most profound coincidence in history, NO miracle God has ever performed has EVER left so much as a shred of verifiable proof for science to look at. So many millions and millions of witnesses to miracles, and NONE thought to collect some sort of proof for skeptics.

And just in case the similarities between Christianity and cult superstition was lost on anyone up to this point, some Christians will complete the picture for you by recalling the old standard retort recited by so many psychics, crystal healers, new agers, pagans, and cultists before them: “It only works if you believe.”

    Dear “Atheist Bob”,

I have a sincere question to ask about what you wrote. I’m not saying I’m for or against it, but even thouse FOR what you say can see this mistake:

“he never ever heals amputees” / “He only heals people with internal sickness” AND SPECIALLY “not a SINGLE ONE has been the regrowth of a severed limb”.

So, “not a SINGLE ONE has been the regrowth of a severed limb”. Do you really know it? If I believed in God, I wouldn’t agree with the argument. If I DIDN’T believe in God, I wouldn’t agree with the argument either!! And I don’t!

Have you been everywhere? Have you seen all miracles? Heard of all miracles? I didn’t. So, the best an atheist (and actually anyone) can say is, “I don’t know if God grows limbs on amputees”, because NOBODY HAS SEEN ALL MIRACLES.

So, just to tell you that most atheists that would read this wil be VERY angry, because instead of helping towards a more rational atheism, your “atheist” arguments actually are ruining the public image of atheism. You must provide well sounded arguments or you’ll instead destroy the reputation of atheism!

  2. Jeremy Says:

Athiests will read this and nod, because it’s correct — amputated limbs do not grow back. Ever. And if one had, you can rest assured we’d hear about it nonstop. Do you have to see every inch of sky in the world to know it’s blue?

Stop pretending you’re an athiest, Gabriel. Your reasoning smacks of anti-science Christianism, and you’re not fooling anyone.

  3. atheistbob Says:

Most atheists who read this would not be “very angry” because most atheists — if not all — would agree. One atheist whom I know would agree: Richard Dawkins. How do I know? Because I’ve seen him use the exact same argument.

Tell you what: you present to me evidence that God healed an amputee, we’ll consider the possibility. Until then, all we have are the millions of people who claim God healed their sickness… and not a single one who can prove it.
